Portland Auto Dealer: 2012 Ford F-150 SVT Raptor is the Ultimate Off-Roader
Over the last 4 years, the Ford F-150 SVT Raptor has become one of the most highly respected and sought-after performance pickups in the industry. As Motor Trend reports, the 2012 model continues to impress as the best Raptor Ford has released to date.
While the Raptor is often praised for its speed, the auto publication decided to put the performance pickup to the test with a rock climbing adventure in the mountains near Moab, Utah. Immediately, they commented on its off-road build including its high ground clearance, versatile suspension and tremendous power.
Several tweaks were made to the 2012 model that came in handy for mountain terrain as Ford looks to improve its vehicles each year. In terms of design, a new blue interior package is available and the bright orange exterior of last year has been replaced with Race Red. It also includes new side graphics and aluminum accents in the cabin to add to its premium feel.
The new Torsen front differential significantly improves the front grip of the truck and makes it possible to overcome obstacles that the truck simply couldn’t tackle in previous years. Others improvements include Hill Descent Control, electronic-locking rearend, and a front-facing camera. Additionally, its Off-Road mode allows the transmission to hold gears longer, allowing it to perform in the snow, mud and dirt.

Portland Car Dealer: 2011 Ford F-150 Lineup Lives Up to the Hype
When the newest generation of Ford F-150s debuted in 2009, they easily won Motor Trend‘s Truck of the Year honors. Ironically, it was also the point when Ford’s engine lineup was noticeably aging. There were three separate V-8 engine options, all of which were slowly falling behind in fuel economy, horsepower, and torque.
The 2011 F-150 lineup has put an end to that era and brought on an exciting new lineup of engines, recently tested by Motor Trend:
- 3.5-liter V-6 EcoBoost Twin-Turbo Lariat SuperCrew
- 3.7-liter V-6 STX Regular Cab
- 6.2-liter V-8 Harley-Davidson Edition AWD
- 5.0-liter V-8 XLT Supercrew 4×4
As you can see, the three V-8 engines have been swapped out for two brand new V-6s and two new V-8s. All four engines come w
ith variable valve timing, the popular Ford engine feature that can help dramatically improve engine performance in the areas of emissions and fuel economy. All four models also feature the six-speed automatic transmission that was rated highest in previous model years, and all but the 6.2-liter V-8 are made with all-aluminum construction. In perhaps the biggest surprise of all, power has increased across the board from previous model years – even in the newest V-6s.
As for the new V-6s, the Ecoboost version (which runs a mere $750 more) results in a nice torque increase while the STX runs smooth and is great for towing smaller equipment such as a small boat or jet skis. The V-8s provide the power and torque enjoyed by customers in previous models, but are improved in every area. The XLT Supercrew was said to be “so smooth, it doesn’t feel like it’s working hard”, while the Harley-Davidson edition provides just the opposite: “a nasty grumble at idle and fantastic seat-of-the-pants feel”.

Portland Ford Dealer: 2011 Ford F150 SVT Raptor is More Than Your Average Performance Truck
The 2011 Ford F150 SVT Raptor just might challenge your stereotypes about performance trucks.
Frank Markus, Motor Trend‘s technical director, recently took the latest Raptor for a spin in the snow to find out how it would handle Ford’s rigorous cold-weather testing facility.
He certainly wasn’t disappointed. In addition to its 8,000 pound towing capacity, the 2011 Raptor includes domesticated features such as power folding mirrors and a 4.2″ screen for its variety of off-road functions. While he was impressed with the sport mode and electronic differential lock, he preferred the standard 4WD setting when tackling Ford’s tricky snow-handling course.
Above all, the one aspect that stood out the most against previous models was its small feel compared to its very large size. The steering, handling, and agility provides the driver with a feeling of complete control without sacrificing performance.

Portland Auto Dealer: 2011 Ford Explorer Scores Big in Test Drive
In a recent test drive, Motor Trend found the new 2011 Explorer to offer a smoother, quieter ride than previous models. Thanks in large part to Alan Mulally’s push for quicker updates to Ford models, the Explorer’s new architecture offers better packaging, fuel mileage, handling, and maneuverability.
In response to the Firestone tire tread separation problems of the past, the Explorer is well-equipped with new standard safety features which include AdvanceTrac with Roll Stability Control and Safety Canopy with rollover sensor. It also adds Curve Control, which reduces engine torque by braking in tight curves when the system senses the driver is going too quickly. And it pioneers the industry’s first inflatable seatbelts.
The new vehicle not only comes loaded with a lot of standard features, it also offers a road/off-road surface-control system called Terrain Management. With no transfer cases, Terrain Management manipulates torque to each of the wheels with four driver-selected settings that can be shifted on the fly: normal, mud, sand, and snow. And soon, Ford will add the turbo-charged EcoBoost as the optional engine.
